The origin of Groove Music |
| The groove is like a feeling, a vibration, an atmosphere which it does not define a musical kind. The American expression in the groove (literally: in the furrow of the music) is initially used in the jazz circle and means, by extension all that is "in the blow", or connected. Becomes a verb in the years 1940, to groove means "to be burst". Thereafter, the adjective groove or groovy will indicate the sensitivity of the American negro music, its cordial tonality, its roots, which one finds in jazz and in rhythm and blues, the soul or funk music. It applies, for example, to the orchestrations jazz funk of Miles Davis in the years 1970. However, thereafter, fusion jazz-rock'n'roll (George Benson, Herbie Hancock) is distinguished from the groove. Started again in the years 1980, with the tube of Earth, Wind and Fire, Let' S Groove, the groove merges readily with all that is influenced by the funk and musics fusion of black origin. For this reason, funk artists like George Clinton, James Brown during his funk time, or the Parliament group can be regarded as Masters of the groove. |
A DECOUVRIR6 LOVE BOX |
| Groove Amanda: Thrusting bumps, throbbing bass lines that either get the ball rolling or continue where "Hello Nightclub" left off. The usual suspects (Richie Havens) and this time out Neneh Cherry play their signature roles in keeping Groove Armada on the dancefloor and drifting further from the expansive shoreline sounds once sending us off into sundrenched dreams found on "Vertigo."...click here |
| | PRECISION |
| Like musical kind, the groove enjoys to be regarded as the music of today, marked by the funk, but richer and more modern. Limited a long time to a public of purists, the groove is essential at the beginning of the years 1990 among the musical currents most dynamic. The label Big Cheese Records leaves several compilations. The success of the album Too Young to Die (1992) of the young British artist Jamiroquaï, very influenced by Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye, gives a very pop approach of the music groove. The father of the funk George Clinton, accompanied by his group The P. Funk All Stars, succeeds in giving a new dash to his funk traditional, thanks to an electronic instrumentation in his last album The Awesome Power of Fully - Operational Mothership (1996). In France, the groove finds its representatives with artists like Sinclair or Malka Family. |
HARD GROOVE |
| Roy Hargrove: This is an album that reveals as much about the perspective of the listener as about the music itself. Are you coming at this from a pure jazz perspective? There isn't too much straight ahead stuff on this album and you may be with the critics that bashed Roy for making something more accessible than typical jazz fare. Hoping for a jazz-hip-hop hybrid...click here |
