Soul music - Definition

Where am i -> Home -> Soul -> Soul music - Definition

The originality of soul music rests on the use of a particular singing technique taken from gospel music (hymns of the American Blacks). On a musical basics borrowed from the rhythm and blues, the song, very expressive, is supported by choruses of gospel which again takes the melody of it. Soul Music was born at the end of 1940 thanks to singers from blues such as Bobby Bland and groups like The Ravens. In the years 1950, the changing was ensured by soloists of church accompanied by choruses of gospel which launched out in the adventure of  pop music and recorded discs: Clyde Mc Phatter, leader of Dominoes, and Sam Cooke, famous gospel singer . However, one will retain especially, among the greatest names of the soul of these years, those of James Brown, of which the Please title, Please, Please (1956) has the immense enthusiasm of the black sermons, and of Ray Charles, whose tube What' D I Say (1959) diffused the sound soul near a very large audience.

In the years of 1960, soul music became extremely popular, thanks to two houses of mythical discs. Atlantic Records produced Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Percy Sledge and Aretha Franklin. And company Tamla Motown celebrates it increases with the Supreme ones, The Temptations, The Four Signals and Marvin Gaye. But the implication of  large companies in the production of soul music evolved the style of that -  to a more consensual version.
With the turning of the years 1970, the sound soul of the origins had changed considerably: softened, packed musical arrangements and made more attractive, it had become Philadelphia sound of The O' Jays and The Spinners.Since the years 1980, soul music joined to pop and international variety. Singers like Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey or Brandy enjoy an enormous success.
