Michaux : Biography

| | From the faded yellow pastels of the CD cover, to the boot and flared denim that he sports, to the opening Fender Rhodes on "All I Need", the artist MichauX presents something a little bit different on his album debut, Just MichauX. Call it an onslaught of soulful mellow, marinated in scripture and praise, with influence from notables such as Maxwell and Marvin Gaye. The Texan makes an impact, albeit in soft style, on songs such as "Anything" and "Toni", positioning his nuanced, floating tenor over subtle bass and synths, telling of God's love. While much of the project moves along a similar tempo, some cuts find their pocket in nuanced detours. "He Paid It All" has just the right touch of production reverb, and a good bass line (courtesy Nick Lewis). "Resti 2 tion" gets downright funky, with a heavy 'woogy' factor integrated alongside Chad Paxton's understated electric, moody, guitar. The song warns that what we do in our lives matters eternally, and is followed up by the alternatively-titled, but reprise none-the-less, "Payment". MichauX veers into slightly more urban territory on "Necessary Truth", telling of Someone who can "clean up the mess", bringing in flowing rap lines and chat from Eric Merino and Critical Issue. "Hey Girl / Hey Playa" follows suit and is a like-themed appeal without the rap. Toss in other cuts such as the laidback, guitar-kissed "Stay", and the nicely-chorded "What You Wouldn't Do For Love", and you'll see that there's plenty to choose from indeed on this innovative debut. Call on MichauX to frame that Holy soul scene you've always desired. |
